After helping launch and edit a local-news Web site in Seattle called Crosscut, I'm on hiatus and looking for a new opportunity.
At Crosscut, I designed the site, oversaw technology development, edited most of the content, established the editorial standards, and oversaw a small editorial staff and freelancers. I was laid off during a company transition to non-profit status.
Life story, abridged:
I was reared in Michigan and Ohio. My first job after Whitman College in Walla Walla, Wash., was at the Tri-City Herald in nearby Richland, Kennewick, and Pasco, where I worked as a reporter and editor from 1980-85.
I joined The Seattle Times in 1985 as the paper's first newsroom graphic designer. During my 16 years at The Times, I worked as a designer, editor, or reporter in four news departments. As a reporter, I covered media, with emphasis on television, and Boeing and aviation safety.
During the seven-week newspaper strike of 2000-01, I organized and edited the Seattle Union Record, a newspaper and Web site published by striking staffers of The Seattle Times and the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.
I did a five-week editing stint at MSNBC.com during the 2002 Winter Olympics.
From 2002-06, I was managing editor of Seattle Weekly, the city's leading alternative paper, overseeing news coverage and the paper's evolving Web site. I joined Crosscut in late-2006.
I also worked as a disc jockey long ago, have a rusty pilot's license, and have spent time in all 50 states.
I'm looking for a leadership opportunity in media, or a temporary position appropriate to my skills as a seasoned editor and project manager.
